The Kitchen Musician ~ August 2010

Hello Friends,

Is it summer yet? For Margo and me the answer is finally – yes! We are happily spending most of August at our New Hampshire cabin, taking a break from all (most) things of civilization. This month I have a big show to announce, and a free music download for your iPod!

This Month’s Music

Since I am on vacation this month, I have no new songs or video to share, but to help make up for it, I offer you a free download of my song “You’re Not Alone” – a kitchen studio version that I recorded in June to benefit Osteosarcoma (Bone) and Brain Cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This recording was used for the soundtrack of a video at a large Boston area fund raising event. On this recording I am ably assisted by my daughter Mally Smith (vocals) and my friend Tom Bianchi (bass).

An Interesting Nature Experience

Bobcat
Bobcat on Peabody Hill

Finally, I leave you with this photo taken by Dennis Wallace, our New Hampshire auto mechanic who lives on the other side of Peabody Hill (about 1 mile from our cabin). One of his chickens was stolen by a bobcat. He reported this to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department which sent over a team of experts who tranquilized the bobcat with a dart gun when he returned for seconds. After fitting the bobcat with a tracking device, Dennis snapped this photo of his daughter holding the thirty-eight pound feline. Although I am assured that bobcats would rather flea than attack a human, it reminds me that I am a guest in someone else’s house here on Peabody Hill. Wishing you all some quiet time to share with those you love, and interesting experiences with nature.

~ Peace and music,

~ Tom

WOW WOW WOW, what a beauty!!! I guess I hadn’t realized there were bobcats right around there, Tom…that certainly adds a new wrinkle to “check the yard before you venture out in the dark”.
So glad that you and Margo are having your favorite downtime of the year. Hope you get to make some interesting “artistic fungus-among-us” this month ~(:>)
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful song.
Be well, see you both soon!

This is one of my favorite Tom Smith songs. A song inspired by a specific cause, yet universal in its warmth, caring, and love. Vocals/harmony, harp, melody, lyrics — simply beautiful Tom. I have chills listening to this.

And, I too want a pet bobcat. Enjoy your vacation — may the muse be with you.

Geez, and here I thought our Tabby/Siamese mix was huge (“My name is Mack and I’m not fat, I’m just big boned, dat’s all” – My Name Is Mack, words & music by his owner). Tranquilizer darts, eh? Maybe we oughta consider that so we can cut Mack’s claws! 🙂

That picture was NOT taken by my father Dennis. That was taken by our neighbor the millers and the person pictured is mrs miller. Lol. I am his oldest at 16

    Hello Shawna,
It is nice to meet you electronically. Thank you for setting the record straight about that photo on my web site. I guess I had some of the details wrong. It certainly was a most impressive cat! Perhaps we will meet some day in Jaffrey.
